The National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS), founded by the late Shri JRD Tata, is a private, not-for-profit, Institute with the twin missions of conducting inter-disciplinary research on problems relating to the development of the country, particularly those requiring immediate study and resolution; and of imparting higher knowledge to professionals to broaden their academic and cultural perspectives. It provides a working environment conducive for scholarship and compensation competitive with other publicly funded research institutions in India.
The Energy and Environment Policy Programme at NIAS devotes itself to equity, efficiency and environmental concerns arising from the country’s energy sector. Several exciting projects are currently underway including the following:
Establishing and Coordinating a multi-institution project called the Global Technology Watch Group on Renewable Energy Technologies;
Studying the Feasibility of Pumped Hydro Storage Systems to complement variable wind and solar energy in Karnataka;
Ø Studying the Diffusion of and Access to Distributed Rural Electricity Systems; Ø Studying the growth, direction and composition of nuclear power in India and
Ø Modelling the likely size and relative composition of the country’s energy sector in the future.
The School has an immediate opening for a Professor to provide comprehensive leadership for current research projects and attracting funding in new domains. The appointment will initially be for three years, but is renewable. We are looking for an individual with strong academic training as well as a broad understanding of the energy and environmental issues in the country and world-wide. The requirements are as follows:
Ø A Ph.D. in science or engineering or social sciences with at least 14 years of work experience in energy related areas;
Ø Established leadership record;
Ø A strong track record of publications, of attracting funding, of outcome-based pursuits and capabilities for innovation;
Ø Excellent writing and communication skills; ability to work in a team and strong inter-personal skills; attention to detail and organizational skills;
Ø The upper age limit for this position is 55 years; there is no lower age limit.
